I gotta tell you: part of me is seriously dreading the day that my three year-old decides she MUST HAVE an American Doll.

They are lovely, really. I get it. But $100+. Ouch.

  1. When she does Target makes an excellent knockoff and around the “holiday” season Costco carries the Madame Alexander dolls. Those make an excellent starter 18 inch doll and she can practice with that one until you think she is ready to move up to the pricey ones. Or at least that is what I told my 7 year old 😉

  2. Hi Mara:
What I would do is start saving now in order to painlessly buy your daughter the American Girl Rebecca in a few years. Her character is a Jewish immigrant to New York in the early 1900’s. You can get a bunch of related books, all the Shabbat /Hanukah paraphernalia and more. Yes, it is expensive. – but if you put away about $2 a month, you will easily be able to get Rebecca by the time it is age appropriate. My daughter LOVED hers. It’s really worth it.
