Shmeini Atzeret / Simchat Torah Menu Plan (The Updated Version)

It occurred to me last night that (a) I am really burned out on cooking already and (b) I’m feeling like all we’ve been doing the last week is EATING.

And eating.

And eating.

So, I decided to revamp our menu plan to make things a little easier in the kitchen – and on my waistline. I just don’t need to prepare/serve/consume six HUGE meals over the next four days. Right?

Here’s how I’ve reworked our menu – keeping several things on from my previous menu plan, but also lightening the load, and swapping out a few side dishes.

Friday night

Shabbat Lunch

  • Out at friends, bringing two salads

Sunday night

  • Ketzitzot with techina sauce (I’ll share the recipe if it turns out well)
  • Left-over Basmatic carrot & raisin rice
  • Marinated “pickled” vegetables
  • Fruit salad

Monday lunch

Monday night

  • Yogurts, hard boiled eggs, left-over fruit salad

Tuesday afternoon – my 7 yo’s birthday (oops – I didn’t realize the date when I originally made our plan, so now we have five families coming over post Simchat Torah dancing – for a late and very casual lunch)

  • Bagels, lox & cream cheese
  • Vegetable tray
  • Fruit platter
  • Egg salad
  • Tuna salad
  • Birthday cake and ice cream

Anyone else change up their menu plan last minute in lieu of lighter fare? I’m not the only feeling this way, am I???

  1. Trader Joes opened today in Rochester, NY! I am not making dessert tonight. I got lemon bars and ice cream. Not sure if that is lightening things, but yummifing them;)!

  2. always fun to know what your friends are serving before you go to their house. 🙂

  3. We’re lightening up a little, and changing a few things around, too. Well, I was asked to make a dessert platter for a silent auction later this week, and I’m going to have a few more things for that – so maybe not lightening up after all!

  4. Since we live in Fort Knox, KY (my husband is the Jewish Chaplain here) I have been doing a lot of cooking and hosting since we had to bring the minyan to us for RH and YK! Since I am so burned out and tired we are going to friends for the end days so I don’t have to cook a thing! That is what I call lightening my load! B”H for good friends!

  5. I think I can safely say we are all a little burned out with kitchen duties at this point. I tried to cook for Yontif when I was making Shabbos last Thursday, and I got most of it done. My husband takes off Chol HaMoed, so he helped a lot; it makes a big difference. Your menu looks tasty & healthy, Mara. I’m looking at that rice for next Shabbos.
