7 Ways My Husband Supports My Blog (& I’m Grateful for Every One)

My favorite picture from our wedding

When my friend Amy told me a year ago that I should start a kosher frugal blog, my husband instantly became my biggest cheerleader.

His only advice at the time was, “Make sure that you are willing to give it 110%!”

Hahaha! I don’t think he fully appreciated just how much work and time and love this blog was going to take. 110% is no problem – more like 1010%.

Over the last 13 months, Kosher on a Budget has grown beyond my wildest dreams, and I know without a doubt that I couldn’t have accomplished half of what I have without his unconditional support.

So today, I want to give a great big shout-out to my biggest cheerleader, my husband Frankie!

#1. He does all the laundry.

Not just his laundry, or the boys laundry… all of it. Even my girly stuff. And he does it with a full and complete heart, never complaining about it. He took this on himself when he realized that I was falling woefuly behind. Now, the kids go to bed, I blog, and Frankie folds our delicates. Love you, babe!

#2. He cleans up from dinner.

I hate leaving dirty dishes collecting in my sink, attracting bugs. Yet, my big blogging time is in the evenings, so those dirty dinner dishes often did just that – collect. Like with the laundry, Frankie simply stepped in, unasked, to clean-up after dinner. I love that I come up from my basement office and hear that dishwasher humming.

#3. He packs the kids’ lunches.

This is a chore that, frankly, neither of us relishes. And yet, Frankie took it on as soon as the boys headed back to school. I make sure the fridge is stocked with healthy options, but he does the rest of the work!

#4. He tells me at least once a day how proud he is of me.

Seriously, could I be any luckier? Kosher on a Budget is far from a Fortune 500 company, folks. And yet, the little bit of money I bring in is only a small part of why he takes such pride in the blog. He reminds me frequently that I am helping people. And that is a reward beyond measure.

#5. He is my (rationale) sounding board.

From technical glitches to negative comments, I’m prone to freaking out about blog-related issues. Not only does Frankie remind me why I’m doing what I’m doing – but he helps me keep it all in perspective. He also vets all my crazy ideas, and makes sure that only the (at least partially) sane ones make it onto the blog.

#6. He accepts that our life is becoming a somewhat publicly held commodity.

Of course I want to connect with you all, but my family gets to (has to?) come along for the ride, too – at least to a certain extent. It could be weird for “strangers” to know personal stuff about you, but Frankie accepts and even embraces this access to our lives. Whenever I want to share something a bit more revealing, he is the first to say, “Go for it!” The super personal Dave Ramsey series, for example, had 100% endorsement from Frankie.

#7. He models for our children that Mommy’s time on the computer is IMPORTANT.

It’s hard for kids to understand why Mommy is constantly checking her Facebook page or responding to “urgent” emails. It’s even harder for them to understand why I’m rushing off to a couponing class or conference session, when we’re supposed to be on vacation (like I did in Chicago and Colorado). But Frankie teaches our children to respect my professional “space” by engaging them in fun activities and reminding them that Kosher on a Budget is important – to mommy, to our family, and to many of my readers, too.

As you can tell, this blog is very much a collaborative effort. You may not hear from Frankie very often, but rest assured, behind this blogger is a very supportive hubby!

Thank you, Frankie! And thank you all, for making Kosher on a Budget what it has become today!

  1. Supportive husbands rock! WTG Frankie. I am sure the Dads out there would love Frankie’s perspective on saving money too….

  2. Hi! I am new to your website, and I wanted to tell you how impressed I am with it. Your husband is right– you are helping people. Thanks for sharing your expertise, wise advice, and positive energy!

  3. Omg, I love that picture of you guys! Great post, I plan on leaving it conspicuously open on our computer for a while 🙂

  4. Awesome! Hooray for supportive families!

  5. That’s such a nice post, Mara! May you continue to go from strength to strength!

  6. Great post, Mara. Great husband. I think he is a keeper.

  7. Rachael a.k.a. Mama Jew (in the Lou) says

Mara, I just loved reading this! I’ve been talking about your blog to my husband and would love him to read it, too. Your website is so much more than so many out there. Thank you!

  8. Must make sure my wife doesn’t read this! 😉

    • But just think, if you did the dishes and laundry, she’d also be singing your praises to a few thousand people!

  9. This post is so sweet, and your husband sounds so too 🙂 I also love your wedding dress! I wear short sleeves too but haven’t seen many tznius dresses with such a length… it’s either cap sleeve or long sleeve. You look beautiful!

    • Oh, thank you very much. I loved, loved, loved my dress. It was exactly what I wanted – simple and shimmery. The dress was actually sleevelss, but I liked the neckline on it – and since it was way too long on me, I bought it off the rack and had a dress maker take up the bottom and build me some sleeves. 10 years ago (when I got married) and probably still now, all the long sleeve dresses I found were very lacey, beady, not my style. And almost everything else was strapless. (Gosh, I can’t believe I still get so excited talking about my dress!)

  10. Thank goodness for supportive husband!!!!!!! It really takes a couple working together to make a household and career(s) run.

  11. I love Frankie. And not only because maybe one day he’ll bring you back here to be my neighbor. 🙂

  12. Wow, you are so blessed! And that picture is presh! I so appreciate how helpful your blog is. I know you put a lot of work into it, but it sure is a timesaver for me. I talk to my friends about it all the time! Give your hubby a big “thank you” from me (one of many, I’m sure)!

    • Thank you so much, Anna. I really appreciate everything my readers do to spread the word. I’m so fortunate. And I’ll be sure to pass on the thanks :).

  13. I love this Mara! I’m debating sending it over to my hubby . . . who will then most likely dislike your hubby! 🙂 (Actually, he has started doing the laundry, and really does help, but I love that your husband is so supportive . . . mine’s getting there!)

Great post – & LOVE the wedding pic (how sweet!)

  14. This is the SWEETEST post. I love it (and the pic from your wedding -you both have that post-chuppah glow).

May you always have such a wonderful relationship!

  15. How did I miss this fantastic post! It was like reading about my husband because my husband has taken on many chores so I can attend to blogging. I’m so thrilled you have such a supportive family! And I’m so glad I’ve had the opportunity to meet you in real life and eat Kosher Thai food with you.
