The Night Before Hanukkah

I am excited to tell you about a new children’s picture book just out on the shelves, The Night Before Hanukkah!

Written by best-selling author Natasha Wing, The Night Before Hanukkah is her 18th book in her bestselling Night Before Series. These sweet-rhyming books capture all the excitement and anticipating of important dates and holidays in children’s lives. If you’ve read any of the other books in series, the cadence of the books will be familiar to you!

Night Before Hanukkah

Dad put on his yarmulke, pinned it down on his hair; then Mom lit the shammash candle after saying the first prayer. The flames — how they flickered! Our faces — cast in light! We sang “Rock of Ages” while the candles burned bright.

We own Natasha Wing’s The Night Before Kindergarten, and it is one of my daughter’s favorite books. We read it non-stop for the two weeks before kindergarten started — and probably another 2 weeks after. She still pulls it out sometimes today!

The next night we played dreidle – that’s a top that you spin with four Hebrew letters: nun, hey, gimel and shin. We each tossed in a coin made of chocolate, called gelt. I snuck one and ate it, before it could melt.\

The Night Before Hanukkah is written for a wide audience — so I was impressed with how sensitively the author and illustrator portrayed the holiday.

I noticed for example, that the father dons a kippah to say the bracha over the candles (and the mother even ties on a tichel!) On the first night, the children open small presents, but I was very pleased to see that the theme of the book was definitely NOT on the gift giving, but rather on the traditional food, history, songs and community of the Festival of Lights.

The Night Before Hanukkah

On the third night of Hanukkah, after the candles were aflame, Dad read the story of Jewish heroes — Maccabee was their name.

I thought The Night Before Hanukkah was a sweet story for young children and their parents to read together during Kislev — and most importantly, my five year old book critique daughter agrees!

To celebrate this new book, 5 KOAB readers will win their own Night Before Hanukkah book — along with four others in the series.
