Purim Sameach, my friends!
Here are a few pictures to tell the story of our family’s celebration this year.
My kids are dressed up as a black cat, a tough guy biker (uhhh, except he called himself a bad@$$ not “tough guy” 😱), and, well, nothing. I guess once you hit 15-almost-16, costumes become passé.
We aren’t a very theme-y kind of family, neither with our costumes nor with our mishloach manot, though I greatly admire those of you who are! (There was that one Star Wars year….)
I’m just happy we managed to finish our mishloach manot before megillah reading – a rarity for us.
My kids each make up shalach manot for their friends, stuffed with as much junk food as possible. My middle one, the bad*** biker, wanted me to make a label for his bag. I still can’t quite believe I did this!!! I sure hope his friends’ moms aren’t judging me for it.
My husband and I made a few mishloach manot to hand out to our friends and family. I saw these cans of bubbly wine (cans! of wine!) on sale at my local grocery store a few weeks, which set this idea in motion.
I wanted to make “bar” food to go with the wine. Originally I was just going to do pretzels and peanuts, but then I got a bug in my head to actually make something.
Enter this amazingly delicious sweet & spicy nuts recipe. OMG, you guys. These nuts are so good. The recipe does have quite a lot of sugar, so unfortunately it’s more of a treat-food, than a heart-healthy nut snack. But hey. Purim.
I designed the little cards on Canva (I have a paid membership, because of blog stuff, but a free account is totally sufficient for most people and it’s such a user-friendly program).
Since our printer is black and white only, I sent the file to our local printer and paid $4 to print out a couple dozen of them.
The most expensive part of the package was the nuts, but I still managed to spend around $3.50 (12 NIS) per mishloach manot, which was my budget. Cute and budget-friendly. I’m thrilled.
You know what I didn’t manage to do this year? Bake hamantaschen! Yup. Not a single triangle cookie was made in my kitchen. Sigh.
As I said yesterday on Instagram, #tradeoffs.
We can’t do all the things, all the time. Acknowledging that to myself, and embracing the choices I am making, significantly helps to reduce my stress and mommy guilt.
