Long-term KOAB readers know I have always sung the praises of my Dyson stick vacuum. I still have mine and I do still love it.

But, I also got the Bissell earlier this year and I have been totally surprised by how often I reach for it over my Dyson. Plus, if you’re in the market, this Bissell will run you at least $100 than the lowest model Dyson stick — and $200+ less than a comparable model.

So if you’re intrigued, let me tell you what I love about this Bisell PowerClean FurGuard Vacuum:

#1. The headlights – I love, love, LOVE the headlights! I love seeing all the dust bunnies, dog/cat hair, and anything else that is on my floor. It’s crazy how without the lights, that stuff just blends right into my tile and I don’t even notice it. How did I ever function before I had those headlights???

#2. The self-standing feature – I don’t think I realize how often I had to go find something to lean my Dyson on until I got the Bissell, which conveniently can stand by itself.

#3. Emptying the container – It’s much easier and less cumbersome to empty the dust container on the Bissell than on the Dyson. It’s a much better design, which doesn’t require you to remove the tube from the head of the vacuum.

#4. The built-in crevice tool – Both the head and the tube have a built-in crevice tool, so you can easily clean up your baseboards while vacuuming, without having to run and get another tool. (You can see it on the right of the high-reach vac picture, above.)

#5. The batteries – first, the battery lasts longer than on my Dyson and second, you can easily take out and put in the battery. My vacuum actually came with two batteries (amazing!), but you can always buy a second battery for not too much and then have a ready back-up whenever you vacuum a larger area. Running out of battery on my Dyson is such a bummer because I can never clean the whole house or even floor in one go.

Now in the spirit of full disclosure, I will also tell you that there are two features / functionalities that I like better on my Dyson:

#1. The mini motorized brush on the Dyson is simply better, IMHO, than the Bissell Furfinder tool. It just seems to suck better. We have pets, and even though they are not allowed on the couch, they seem to think that rule doesn’t apply at nighttime once we all have gone to bed. (Evil geniuses!) Vacuuming the pet hair off the couch is simply faster and better when I use the Dyson.

#2. The Dyson seems to work better on my low pile carpets than the Bissell. I only have two area rugs, so it’s not a huge deal for me, but I definitely have noticed that the Bissell doesn’t get as deep down into the fibers. If you have mostly hard flooring, then the Bissell will be perfect. But if you have mostly carpet, I’d probably recommend that you go with the Dyson.

As you can tell, even with these two drawbacks, I am enamored with this new vacuum of mine — and I really think you will love it, too. For such a feature-rich vacuum, you will be getting a real steal at only $179.99.
