Kansas City Readers: Shares Available in My Awesome CSA

Three years ago, I was looking for a CSA to participate in. The problem was I didn’t wanted to schlep half-way across town to pick up my share. So, I decided to see if I could organize my own little CSA – with pick up at my shul, right down the street.

I was incredibly fortunate to develop a relationship with a wonderful organic farmer named Laura Christenen. She runs Blue Door Farms in a one-acre urban plot and our little CSA is her one-and-only. (She also sells at various organic farmers market throughout the metro area).

Her produce is amazing. It’s so wonderful to have farm-fresh veggies and to know that they are completely safe and organic for my family to eat. In fact, whenever we get cucumbers in our share, the kids generally gobble those up in the car on the way home! Plus, Laura is such a big-hearted person and has taught our family so much about the benefits of growing your own food (she even helped us start our little front yard garden).

Laura has a few partial and full shares open for the second session of the CSA, which starts next Wednesday, July 13. It’s ten-weeks long and will last through September 7. Partial shares are $150 for the session ($15/week) and full shares are $250 ($25/week). Both are a wonderful value for the delicious, organic produce that you will enjoy!

Pick up is Wednesdays in the BIAV parking lot (97th and Antioch) between 4:30 – 7:00 p.m.

Here’s what you can expect in the shares, per Laura:

As we move into the hot Kansas summer, shares will start to include tomatoes, basil, peppers, squash, cucumbers, potatoes, onions, garlic, carrots, beets, eggplant, etc.  Some greens – chard, kale and cabbage, will be included, but not in every share.

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment here – or email Laura directly at bluedoorfarm AT gmail DOT com. I hope some of you will join us!

  1. I e-mailed last week but have not heard anything. Are partial shares still available?
