Kansas City’s Kosher BBQ Festival Is Back!

Kansas City Kosher BBQ Festival 2013

Last summer, you may recall me telling you about a maiden voyage: The first-ever Kosher BBQ Competition was held in the nation’s BBQ capitol.

Well, summer 2013 is almost over and America’s Heartland is back at it again!

The second annual KC Kosher BBQ Festival & Competition will be held on Sunday, August 18, at noon on the grounds of The Temple: Congregation B’nai Jehudah, 12320 Nall, Overland Park, KS.

Last year, more than 3000 people showed up to watch 15 teams compete in Kansas City-style slow-cooked juicy smoked brisket, chicken and ribs.

This year is going to be even bigger and better! For starters, Food Network Next Iron Chef celebrity Simon Majumdar will be among the judges!

Attendees can look forward to purchasing smoked brisket and chicken, prepared by BBQ volunteers, as well as hotdogs, coleslaw, chips and watermelon.

BBQ aficiandos will want to stick around for grilling demos by local Pitmaster Andy Groneman.

For kids, you can enjoy Rockin’ Rob performance (he’s in the educational entertainment niche) and local band Conviction will make its first public appearance. Amateurs can participate in hotdog and pickle-eating contests.

Information about team sign-up, volunteer opportunities, and more can be found on the KC Kosher BBQ website.

You can even go there to pre-order whole or sliced smoked briskets and pick them up at the BBQ.

Proceeds from the event help make kosher food more widely available in the community, with a portion of the money going to the Yachad Food Pantry, the Jewish Family Service Food Pantry and KC Kosher Meals-on-Wheels.

Anyone wanna plan a road trip to Kansas City?! The weekend of August 16th is a great time to do it!

For more information, email my friend Rabbi Mendel Segal (msegal@vaadkc.org), Executive Director of the Vaad HaKashruth. And Pitmaster of Team RaBBi-Q, which won third place for his chicken and brisket, and 6th place for his ribs at last month’s kosher BBQ competition on Long Island.

  1. We are really hoping to make it this year!!! Last year it was the weekend after we left KC and we couldn’t come back, this year we should just be pulling back into the MidWest in time to get there!
